What are you guys' opinions when comparing these cars?

There is one of each for sale in my area. I haven't checked out either of these cars yet, but I might soon. Here's the breakdown..

190e 2.3-16
  • Engine has low compression 95, 32, 35, 33 NON RUNNING
  • Automatic
  • Back end "crunched" ? Picture of the back doesn't seem to be that bad? Must check
  • Miles: ?
  • Asking price very low
  • Smoke silver
1992 300CE
  • No reverse
  • Miles: 134k
  • Supposedly runs well
  • Anthracite grey (I believe)
Hypothetically, if these two cars were compared when in fully, properly running condition, what can I expect? MPG? I'd think running costs would be around $1k a year? The 300ce appears to have more HP? Both look quite nice.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Edit: MPG was just for curiosity's sake.

I am by no means a professional mechanic but I'd bet the Cosworth will cost a lot to rebuild. Looks like a head gasket problem based on the comp test. You should prob expect to rebuild the trans as well.

300CE's I know a thing or two about. I'm rebuilding my motor and trans right now on my 89. The reverse problem will build into a slippage issue leading to a full rebuild.

I've always felt that the 190 would be a great all around street car/touring car. Good oomph at take off and top end. My 300 is certainly more of a top end tourer.

That probably didn't help you much, just my 2 cents.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Cosworth would be $1-2k to rebuild...not to mention if anything is wrong with the transmission...

Not too concerned about reverse. Either just get a used trans to put in, deal with it, or follow this. My 420 has no reverse currently. Just gotta watch out when parking. But I do plan on following that guide pretty soon, probably over spring break.

I would go with the w124 over the w201, as it sounds like less of a headache.

But it totally depends on what you're after. They're totally different cars.

Unless the coupe is a sportline or has a stickshift, get the cosworth. it retains its value and is a blast to drive.

edit:

ewww, just read the cosworth is an automatic?

buy it and part it out for it's LSD bits/bodykit and buy a car that isn't falling apart :D

There were only 1752 Cosworth 2.3 16V's imported in 86/87. I have an 86 with the dogleg 5 speed. It is a quick, entertaining car and has no problem breaking loose the rear tires. I keep in garaged and covered. Probably should take it out more often and scare kids in wannabe coffee can muffler cars.

The 300CE, purely because it has far less issues than that particular 2.3-16. In general? More of a 124 man myself, but opinions differ. I would like to try one of those Cosworth engines though.

When the twin cams start doing there magic at 4000 rpm, the 2.3 comes alive in a big way. I had a 300CE M104.98 7000 rpm motored car for several years. Great car. The 190 is just a different beast. Extremely responsive and if you have enough road room, extremely entertaining.
