Hi everyone!

First, I'm new here so thanks for any responses in advance, I'd appreciate a bit of advice!

So I've been cruising around in a 300ce I bought about a year and a half ago, love the car and had never skipped a beat but has now suffered a blown head gasket. After being quoted a scary amount for a rebuild I started wondering whether it might even to be better to go for a swap at that point, I mean it's at 195k at this point. Anyway, lo and behold a nice M117 5.0 from a W126 SEL has been offered to me for a decent price, looks good at only ~95k miles BUT without the gearbox.

So my question is this: (and I don't know nearly enough about what I'm talking about!) The transmission in the 300ce is the 722.3ish I believe, and the 500SEL also came with a 722.3ish, are these interchangeable? I wonder whether the existing transmission in my car will fit the M117 or whether I need to obtain one from a W126. Or even if this is a good idea to begin with!

Cheers for any help all, feel free to tell me if I'm being a pleb, just a dreamer with a (somewhat) busted merc

unless you are looking for a rather large hobby project, you may want to think about it. I have done many eng/trans swaps on various cars and one thing I found out...….unless you have the donor vehicle parked right next to the project car you are jumping down a rabbit hole. wiring loom, exhaust, cooling and on and on. I would just put in a nice used engine and enjoy the car again. best of luck, keep us posted.
