Has anyone ever looked into doing this? I have a 1991 4Matic in great shape. 4Matic wagons with diesels have never been available in North America. I was figuring it might be an interesting project to pick up a 1990 or 91 300 TD wreck with a strong engine and canibalize it. I suspect the net cost would be around $5000 with about 40 hours labor. The 4Matic has the heavy duty suspension already. I figure you'd need to upgrade the electrical and charging systems, perhaps change or modify the rad and add some additional fuel filtering on top of installing the engine and pump.
It would be interesting to hear from someone who has tried or even suceeded in doing something like this.
