Well,
My 78' 300D from what the owner told me has a three speed French Tranny in it. Drives awesome but man does it roar on the freeway keeping up to 70mph, ha. Anyone else have one of these? Let me know your experiences if you have any on these older transmissions. I heard that they were more durable than the later 4 speed and 5 speed trans. Thanks.

yep, you start in 2nd unless you floor it and hit the kickdown switch. If you want to start in 1st put the shifter in L and then put it back in D, it will start in first.

There is no such thing as a 3 speed french tranny.

I once saw a French Tranny, made eyes at me.... I promptly left Paris and headed back to the Rheinland

glorykid, are you talking about automatic transmission with gearbox at the steering wheel? Rare combination, but that has 3-speeds as far as I remember. Friend of mine has it. All "floor shift" for W123 are 4-speed automatic transmissions.

I agree with you, my friend. Am member of our local MB chapter here has a 240d with column shift.... he acquired it from a former ambassador who specifically requested a column shift A/T.

TOTALLY COOL!
