I'd like some background on the W126 280SE. I've seen some for sale in the US, but I believe that they are grey market cars. Are they a good choice as for a daily driver concerning parts, etc.?
Thanks

They are all gray market, great choice, parts are easy.

I do know of a nice one for sale here in Atlanta.

Drop me an email if you are interested.

With gas headed up again they make perfect sense as a daily driver.
Is this comment made in satire?

280SE/SEL's are not frugal by any means. They average about 21 mpg, anyday of the week. They are quick, and there's nothing like that sound of winding the revs up to 6.5K rpm day-in-day-out with its short-stroker engine.

I could run mine on 87 octane gas, and it still pulled just as well as ever, no pinging, and netted me an honest 21 mpg, even if I drove with the pedal like an on-off switch.

It only had 230K miles, and nothing had been touched. Euro car, reclining heated seats front and back, dual horn fanfare, leather seating, power everything. It was loaded up as well as an American 500SEL.

My dad drove one from 100K miles to 360K, a Euro 116, and sold it. Nothing, other than normal maintenence needed to be done. It was his second Mercedes.

Long live the M110.

What did the 280's and other Euros have to go through to be federalized? Were the regulations for emissions, safety etc. national or could changes be determined on a state by state basis? Up here in MN there aren't any type of vheicle checks at all.

M110 all the way! my 280SEL went thru 'federalization' back in 1985 - basically they changed the headlamps, speedometer cluster and they welded intrusion bars in every door .... still have the german A/C switches ....

parts won't be a problem ... I order my engine and suspension parts from the local dealer (for small items) and performance products (suspension and other engine accessory components) they refer to the w126 M110 as comparable to the w123 280CE engine.

Mine was brought in in 1984, only thing that was needed was a cat and an O2 sensor... If the one your looking at has been in the US for awhile. Then everything that was needed to be done to it, has been...
