Hello all, Alas, my 71' 280SE has sprung a leak in the top compartment of the radiator (pictures attached). The question is, should I find a an old used radiator with the expectation that it too may rust through eventually, or go for the recore that the radiator shop said is my only other option aside from an aftermarket radiator? I'm all for the recore aside from the price I was quoted. Does it seem fair?:

Recore: 504.00
Antifreeze: 29.99
kool it: 12.99
clamps: 4.00
antifreeze disposal: 5.95
Labor: 85
Total: 641.92
Total + tax: 702.90

Any thoughts?

Good Gawd, that price seems a little high. I just had mine recored after a leak as well, and paid a little more than $350 for it. Is your location Washington State, or DC? Are there other shops to quote from?

You have the combo oil/tranny/engine cooler, yes?

Years ago, my Dad had a similar issue. He replaced the radiator with one out of a Dodge, and capped off the other coolant lines. He's never had an issue with cooling...

I'd have to check my paperwork but I feel like I had this done on my car for less than $400 total which includes my local shop doing all the removal and re-installation. If you are in WA state and near the OR border, drop it by a shop down here and save the sales tax too!

The recore sounds close to what I was quoted for a "high efficiency" core recently, but I'm in HI.

What I don't agree with is your tax appears to be ~10% ($60 on a $640 job).

Thanks all for the responses! Happily, I may have found a used radiator out on the olympic peninsula (I'm in the state Washington). We'll see today if it works out.

Disassemble, clean, inspect, re-solder, pressure test
about $80 here.

Do before the install or re-core.

If it's a leak in the tank, rather than the core, they are trying to take you. I had a shop here dissemble, patch tank damage, rod, solvent dip, reassemble/resolder, pressure test and repaint for $99.00. In less than 6 hours.


Shop around, and have the one you bought gone through before you install it. You'll have some perious peace of mind.
