I am trying to buy an '81 280 SLC Automatic but I have some doubts:

1. This automatic gearbox has 3 or 4 shifts?
2. The car has the traditional 14" alloy wheels. Are there any original 15" alloy wheels for this car? Or all that I can get is the W126 ones?

Anyone can help me?

Thanks!

1. The 280SLC used a 4-speed automatic (as did the early 350) Most 350 and all 450 used a 3-speed.

2. 14" wheels were standard. There are 15" versions of the early style alloy wheel but they are rare and difficult to find. The flat style 15" alloys as fitted to the late model 107 and 126 will fit. I have them fitted to my 350SLC with 215/60R15 (in place of the original 205/70R14) tyres. From memory, the 280SLC may have run slightly narrower tyres (195/70R14 ?) but I cannot be sure as the 280SLC is rare (in Aus at least, most were 350 and 450). If this was the case, you would need to use an equivalent overall diameter 15" if you upgraded (eg. 205/60R15).

There weren't many 280 made, but here most cars around (SL & SLC) are 280. The 350/380/450/500/560 is quite rare at least since the introduction of 280. We always payed taxes based on the engine size, so nobody would buy a 350 instead of a 280...Too much money for a little more HP!
