Does anyone have info on 280 SL reliability or any issues? I would like to get one. The big 4 seater convertibles, not sure what years that covers, maybe 1980's. Anyone know the average price? Thanks, Frank.
Are you talking about a 280 SE convertible? Get out your checkbook. For the last generation 3.5 L V8 models, restored examples are well over $100,000. Rust buckets are probably in the $30,000 to $40,000 range. Earlier generation 6 cylinder models are cheaper, but not by a whole lot.
You want to look up W111/W112 convertibles. Looks like production dates of 1961-1971 for the W111 range (220 SE, 250 SE, 280 SE and 280 SE 3.5), and 1962-1967 for the W112 range (300 SE)
Did you watch Hangover recently or something?
They are very cool cars. I'll take one. I'll even settle for a coupe.
I am having a blast with my SL. It is an absolute hoot to drive, and being as they are similar vintage to the 140's, they have similarities, but are different at the same time. Not as heavy, not as spacious or well-appointed, but then again, they're not meant to be - they're sports cars!
As for the SE convertible, a friend of mine has one that was completely restored and, while fun for what it is, it is a rather primitive automobile.
