There's a 300SL advertised in Autotrader as a 24 valve. As far as I knew the 300 was the single OHC M103 or did some have the 300-24 M104 as fitted to the E124 300-24s of the same period? I've phoned the dealer and he's adamant it's twin cam.
I'll be veiwing on Saturday and was wondering if theirs any points to look out for on the 300s being either single OHC or DOHC[?].

P.S. What do these return to the gallon urban, I would have thought around 20?

How many liters is a gallon? When I looked into a metric conversion table I found on the internet, there are two sorts of gallons, one "USgallon" (=3.785 liters) and a "gallon" (=4,546 liters).

Driving mostly "light urban" (no larger trafic jams) I get around 14 l/100km in my 1989 300SL. This translates into 16,8 miles per "USGallon" or 20,2 Miles per "Gallon".

107s and fuel consumption

As far as I'm aware, and as JQ states the 107 series 300SL only got the M103 12 valve 3 litre. The M104 24 valve was developed for the 129 series 300SL (and it subsequently found its way into the W124).

Regarding fuel consumption, given that the 300SL would be only slightly lighter than our 300TE I would expect similar figures. Around town ours uses around 14 to 16 litres per 100km (around 19 miles per imperial gallon). In the country we get around 10 to 11 l/100km (27 mpg). Compared to an early V8 107 series, my '73 350SLC (slightly heavier than the 300TE) uses around 18 to 21 l/100km around town and about 13 to 15 l/100km in the country.

No Heckflosse, no 107 will match the fuel consumption of your E220 coupe.

The car was a 129 series, they used a wrong library photo in the advert[)]. Had a few scratchs and the interior was a bit shabby, but it probably would have cleaned up. Anyway I tend prefer the lines of the classic 107 more so I'm not bothering with it.
My E220s getting repaired next week so I might look further a field. Got a bit of an unexpected pay rise at the begining of the year so I could live with 20mpg and for some strange reason I can get a 300SL insured for the same as my E220, and the 280 for around £40 less[?].
