Well I finally bit the bullet and had the 240D professionally detailed and I'm so glad I did. This cleaned up pretty good for 40 year old paint.

I have no idea what products they used but I'm absolutely amazed at the shine. There is some cracking in the paint and a few areas where the paint is worn very thin from the buffing but I think this bought a few years before I need to have it re-painted.

This a perfect example why I'll only buy a Mercedes with single stage paint. Unless the surface is breached, you can almost always recover the finish back to new or darned close to it. I've had a couple of pretty severe examples of this, too:

S500 Paint Recovery

That one was the most extreme, and one of those, "I can't make it any worse than it already is."

My current W123 that's on BAT when I brought it home:

Paint Recovery & Detailing - 300D

That was an easy one. The difference before and after is amazing. Much of this work is pretty simple stuff that just about anyone can do - it's not magic by any means.

I am new here, but would like to know how many $ it costs to have your car professionally detailed if I might ask ? And if you could help me find out HOW DO I GO ABOUT finding a professional detailer in my area ? Does a MB dealer have to do this or just a regular detailer ? I have a 1982 MB 240D and was going to try to detail it myself, but your car looks so good I thought I might ask for your assistance and advice ? Also, my INSULATED HOOD PAD is deteriorating. Is that a project I can take on and replace it ? thanks.

If you have even a limited amount of mechanical skills you can do this yourself. It just takes time and effort, but cost little, which is why I love doing it.

As for your hood pad, easy peasy. Use the "Search" feature at the top right of the forum home page and just put in "hood pad" and I guarantee you'll have more threads on how to do it you'll be swamped.

To get an idea of a hard core "Mercedes Martha Stewart" (me) detailing, check out my detailing pages here:
