Help! I bought a euro-model 1982 240D a few months back. The shift lever was a bit sticky at the outset, particularly moving from 1-2 gear to 3-4. I was driving in 3rd yesterday when the shift lever become stuck in gear. The clutch is working fine but it doesn't want to shift out of 3rd.

Does this seem like a complete transmission failure? any other ideas or similar experiences?

I agree - those bushings are a cheap and easy DIY fix. When you replace them also check the tightness of the allen bolts that tie the linkage to the transmission itself. Bad bushings can sometime cause binding that tends to loosen them up.

Pull the linkages off the arms on the transmission (dont forget whats what) and try to move the arms by hand. Sometimes with worn bushings or shifter the car can think its in a gear when its really not.
