Hi

I`m trying to source a 2nd hand engine for my 1982 230CE project. UK specification car.

I understand the stock engine is an M102.980. However, I think it must have already been changed at least once as the current engine has a serpentine belt and the double-row timing chain. Does that make it an early W124 engine, eg M102.981? How can I check?

Also, can I mate any M102 engine from a w123 / w124 to the gearbox in the car? Or are bellhousings different?

Thanks

There is a small possibility that someone has been clever and installed more modern parts to an old block but I (probably like you) think it is unlikely that someone has done that - they have probably just done an engine swap.

There is usually a number stamped in the top of the engine block on the right hand side (as you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine). On a M102 it is probably hidden quite well under the intake manifold.

You might have a W201 engine fitted - the gearbox might have been changed with the engine - in which case you need to find the number for that which is on the other side of the car (if I remember correctly) near to where the slave clutch cylinder lives. (On an automatic transmission the number is stamped into the casting just above the transmission oil pan)

There are loads of discussions about which gearbox was which etc - see for example this thread (that is current at the moment) =>

Thanks for the info, Stretch.

I`ve been recommended a 190E long block to replace the current engine. I think that should do the job. I`m going to check the engine and gearbox numbers tonight based on your instructions as to where to look.

Cheers
