The engine was working fine then....as the engine works harder I am losing power. The engine revs high and when not needing more torque works. Came on gradually but quickly deteriorated. The mechanic is suggesting it might need a new fuel pump.

Good morning ! You might consider hooking up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold .
Any fluctuations in idle speed or driving speed could be affected by vacuum leaks. A vacuum gauge can speak volumes to the condition of the engine.

When you say "as the engine works harder I am losing power," are you saying that the engine revs high without noticeable speed changes?
