Hello,

I have a 2016 GLC300 and a check engine light of misfire. The car has 56K miles on it and what do you know it is out of warranty by 6k miles and few months. Dealership has checked out the vehicle after taking the head off to look inside the cylinder #2 - found out that cylinder #2 has a cracked piston that is 1.5 inches long. I have contacted Mercedes' customer service and corporate has declined my good will warranty claim giving me the usual run down - the vehicle is a 2nd owner, even though the maintenance has been done completely at the dealership, it is out of warranty so on and so forth. It is now up to the dealership and regional manager to perhaps cover it under good will warranty or give me a big discount. The estimated bill is $8,500 - WOW! I live in New Jersey so prices could be a little higher.

I really think that there is a defect in that piston that led it to be cracked at such a low mileage. Whilst I understand the mechanics of how cars work and may break down after abusive usage and low maintenance, I assure you it is not the case here. This car is taken care of like it is a baby - very clean up to par on so many levels. A "MERCEDES-BENZ" should not simply have a faulty piston like mine that cracked due to what ??? nothing ??? If it does, it should be covered based on records of maintenance and good will and they should 100% stand behind their cars. What do you guys think? Has anybody had the same problem in these cars or in any other cars that have the same engine like the C class? I am asking if there is anywhere to turn/ escalade this situation to get this car fixed by warranty?

Please comment below - anything is appreciated.

M274 and M270 are known for cracked pistons, particularly the early models. #1 and #2 is usually the issue.

MB definitely knows of this issue, they're common enough that even I have replaced a couple pistons in my shop. And always early models. One was a salvage title with 22k, and wasn't under warranty.

Do not let this go.

Thanks for the reply, see the problem is I know this because I have read other forums. The problem is so odd out of the blue there has to be more like me, but I do not have a definite proof on it to stand on. I wish I could see the unpublished TBPs like I used to on alldata.

Update on this issue, Mercedes is going to cover 100% of the labor and 75% of the parts for the repair. I have fought very hard and clever :D Thank you for your responses. and they do know the issue, there is also a very common issue with these cars which is crankshaft vent valve which they wont cover it but since they are in the engine already it is just a matter of part cost so i am getting that done as well as all the rest of the pistons. Hopefully i dont get a piston slap in the future because they are only replacing piston heads.

How did you get them to finally agree? Mine is literally in the shop for this exact reason. I’m waiting on MB but they have already told me no once so far. About to lose my cool.

I am sorry to hear. My suggestion is to keep the pressure on and good luck. They should cover this. Call the Mercedes use Twitter Facebook, i did all of that and it worked.

Good luck keep us updated.

My only problem is nowhere in the Xentry document does it mention cracked pistons. Unless the crack in the piston extends to the wrist pin bore, M-B can refuse to relate the crack to the wrist pin knock issue.

I just had this happen cracked piston #1. 32K miles 2016 SLK 2nd owner - garage kept one driver, it's been over two weeks and no answer yet. I'm so upset - and tired on the waiting game - I am not going away. They need to fix this. I spoke to a repair shop that works on Mercedes all the time and they say MB knows about this problem. I am out of warranty as of December. But under the miles. So Frustrating!

My 28 year old Son bought a 2015 C Class 300 4matic,44,000k on mileage last year, used.First the check engine light came on, so he had a diagnostic on it.They told him that it was piston #1.Than the engine started running really rough, no smoke,so he took it to 2 shops. It is a cracked piston.(#1)This car is not that old,and there isn't that much mileage on it.It should't have this kind of a problem. We normally would have researched the car, but it was a MERCEDES!!!! So the money he was saving for a down payment on a house, now goes to a car repair. What is so unbelievable is that MB KNOWS about this problem, yet fails to do a recall!!(I did tell my Son to keep all repairs in case of a recall)And so far I don't find a class action suit.I now tell anyone that will listen, not to buy MB! ANY MB.Shame on them!

They totally should. But standard corporate procedure is basically deny deny deny to the very last end, and only when faced with legal action or serious penalty, then will take action.

It sucks major balls, but that's how it is. Being nice and not screaming at the poor hapless service advisor doesn't take you far....sometimes pulling a karen is pretty much the only option, and you have to go up the ladder.

Every single corporation does this, from VW/Audi with their piston ring failure on the 2.0 TFSI, to BMW and valve stem leaks and bad turbo to MB with cracked piston. It sucks balls.

I just had this happen on my 2017 GLC300. 59,000 miles and was running great then sudden misfire. Took it into the shop and the piston has broken. Had it towed to the MB dealership I bought it from because Mercedes wouldn't even start a file on it until it was diagnosed by them. Long story short, I now have a $22k repair. Mercedes just got back with me yesterday and is offering a $1k discount on the repairs. In my opinion this is total crap. Longtime Mercedes owner and this should not happen on a vehicle this new or this low of mileage. I have replied today to them and already gotten a "sorry" from them. Any tips on how to proceed? I have asked for the executive referral managers manager to try to run it up the line, but they are stonewalling me.

Open a case with corporate, see where that gets you.

Start looking at independent shops, see how much they charge... Either for piston replacement or engine replacement.
