Any mechanically inclined, knowledgeable individual that can provide insight, please?

New vehicle, and apparently 3 to 4 seconds after engine start, something engages that produces a squeal, especially when the engine is cold upon start. The A/C is off, not yet turned on, so I would not guess compressor engagement...

Any ideas, anyone? Annoying squeal, and it's far more about curiosity than concern about a major mechanical malfunction.

Thanks.

I've heard that noise in pretty much every Mercedes we've owned and been given as a loaner. Some of them brand new too.

I've narrowed it down to the radiator fan and since it doesn't last for more than a few seconds, don't think I would worry too much. My current 2010 ML has been doing it since day one and nothing bad has came out of it so far....

Good luck and enjoy your ML!

Folks, thanks for the replies! Going in for service on Monday to address the squeal. Happens at engine start and often when the A/C is turned on. Guessing a loose belt / tensioner?? Will post after the service. Thanks again!!

Cheers...

Yesterday, both the tech and the asst. service manager said they could not identify the squeal. As soon as I got in my vehicle, 3-4 seconds after engine start, I again had the same 2-3 second squeal. Happened 3 times in a row, went back inside and got the asst. service manager who finally heard it and stated it was coming from an area behind the glove box and must be an air-conditioning and/or vent flap. We drove the car back into the service center and he advised the tech., who said it will be very labor intensive and they need to schedule a loaner. Still waiting for that to happen, but the good news is the asst. service manager heard the problem and feels sure he knows the likely culprit!

More as things progress...

Thanks,

All, interesting finding and solution...

Per my local dealer service advisor, I again (3rd time) brought my car in last Sunday and was given a loaner. Squeal sounded to him like it came from behind the glove box. His guess was an air conditioning or fan door. Turned out they found yesterday after allegedly trouble-shooting for 4 days, the squeal was coming from a sticking or intermittent moving of the recirc. door. Fix was reported as lubricating and/or glueing (paperwork was not clear). So far, so good. The squeal took place around 3-4 seconds after engine start without touching any air-conditioner or fan switch(es). A fan belt or suspected tensioner apparently was ruled out early on.

Go figure...

that is a job well done by the tech, but not so much from the factory :)

I hope that you will be trouble free from now on...

Maybe it was a late x-mas present from MB... Happy New Year
