Hi there,

I have a long start/crank issue with a P0017 code showing up. It basically correlates to the Bank 1 lower camshaft sensor being mis-aligned with the crankshaft position sensor.

I replaced ALL the camshaft sensors and adjusters after that problem, and the problem persists.
I have searched multiple forums on the topic and some go as far as possible mis-diagnosis of having to replace the timing adjuster or sprockets all the way to simply changing the crankshaft sensor.

Is there an easy way to check if the camshafts are out of alignment with the crank? - I heard there was a way to rotate the crankshaft at the pulley to 305 degrees then look for the marks to be aligned (after removing the camshaft sensors). Is that accurate on a 166?

Also this may help - I bought the vehicle not to long ago and witnessed the issue once after nearly a 1000 mile drive. I cleared it and it didnt come back. After that I did wash the car, and the issue came back. I am wondering indeed if it is the crank position sensor after all. Any sort of clues along this path would help. Have access to a good scanner.

Long crank could be a fuel pressure issue also.
Try turning the ign on without your foot on the brake and after 2 or 3 seconds start it and see if it starts quicker.

I was getting multiple codes on mine just last week due to the old original battery. Change it and no more codes and the car is running much better. It was still starting ok but a lot slower compared to now. I had intake manifold MAP sensor code.

Hi there I was able to take a quick break, and give this a try. Simply put the start button into position 2 and it went through the gauge sweep, heard the clicks in the rear (assuming that is fuel pump), waited then put foot on pedal and cranked. Same issue persists - long crank time and check engine light on with above P0017 code persists.

As a thought...if i went about changing the crank position sensor (not be confused with the camshaft position sensor which i changed already)...is the best place for access through the drivers side wheel well?

I’m not completely sure on these engines yet. Still learning on these babies.
I would imagine so.
