2012 is going to be a big year for one of the world’s most famed luxury car makers, Mercedes Benz. The German luxury car company is set to introduce a new M-Class five passenger SUV this fall. The new M-Class is replacing a model that has been incredibly successful, which is still selling well, according to Left Lane. The new 2012 model, however, includes significant updates which Left Lane calls “ingredients to a prize-winning recipe.”

The 2012 M-Class will be available in two models - the gasoline ML350 V-6 and the ML350 Bluetec diesel - at the beginning in the United States. Both versions will feature four-wheel drive. But as previous ML buyers have experienced, there will be other versions offered which will include a ML550 with twin-turbo V8, a ML350 2WD model, and an AMG-tuned ML63. According to Mercedes-Benz, the 3.0-liter diesel V-6 generates 240 hp, 30 more horsepower than the current engine. The diesel engine’s fuel economy has been improved 3 percent to 20 mpg in the city while highway mileage remains at 25 mpg. The gasoline V-6 gets a horsepower boost to 302 from 268 and fuel economy rises to 17 mpg city/22 highway from 15 city/20 highway. A 4.6-liter V-8 will be offered later, according to Mercedes Benz USA.

The 2012 Mercedes ML has the same platform as the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to Auto Blog. While older luxury midsize SUVs were truck-based, meaning the ride was more rocky than smooth, many modern cars in the class are focused on a more balanced ride. The 2012 ML is no exception. It’s built with the security of commuters in mind, and includes a cruise control system which maintains a specific distance between the ML and the car in front of it.

The 2012 M-Class should continue the progress Mercedes has made with each itineration of the vehicle. The ride should get smoother and safer, while the vehicle’s interior is likely to incorporate more advanced technologies. The M-Class maintains its ability to make the heads of every soccer mom turn in 2012.
