Hello, I have tried everything from activating show notifications on my phone and restarting the COMAND system. There is a text message feature at the bottom of the Telephone tab. Even when I have text messages, I click on the tab, and it says no text messages! (By the way we do not have the multimedia package if that is the issue)

I have the 2013 W204 4Matic with multimedia package. After my android is synced it will give an alert sound when I receive a text. It also will display an indicator in the 'progress bar' for the signal strength on the screen. If the vehicle is moving the message can only be 'read to you' out loud. If the vehicle is stationary the text message will display on the screen as opposed to being read to you.

My Wife's CLA-250 4Matic does not have multimedia but does have NAV. Her vehicle will not allow the initiation of a hands free call from the steering wheel button like mine will. Additionally, when she receives a text message the notice and alert are the same, but her vehicle does will not 'read out loud' but will allow you to read the text message even when the vehicle is moving.

Neither vehicle will allow you to respond to a text/SMS although there is a 'grayed out' menu option. I would love the ability to respond to text/SMS hands free only...

They do, but not while the vehicle is moving. There is a good reason for this.

If the driver still texts (using the cell phone), perhaps VIM would be useful. Not safe but better than doing it from the phone.

Diesel Benz,

Have you been able to respond to text/SMS message from the HU while stationary? As noted previously, I have a 'grayed out' menu option that says, "Use" in my text/sms menu which I suspect is for a voice controlled reply but have never been able to reply even with vehicle stationary. I'm wondering if that menu option can be 'activated' with MBZ's software. I completely understand the fears pertaining to liability but am equally confused as my Wife's CLA-250 allows you to read the SMS/Text message while the vehicle is moving and its a year newer...

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on a brand new aftermarket HU that will allow sms reply's and much more completely hands free but the custom console (for R129) is going to be about $1,000 before the cost of the HU. I'm just waiting for the gentleman that builds the consoles to confirm the HU and console will fit my vehicle.

I have a different car but yes, I can send (reply) text messages when the car is stationary.

According to the user manual, this all depends on the phone. Some phones support reading text messages but not sending messages. Sometimes you have to unlock the phone (screen) before sending a message.
