So here are some official pix.... Apparently over there, you can get e-class in stick. as you'll notice there is base, then there is Elegance (Luxury in the states), and then AVANTGARDE (sport in the states).... This is the Sedan Version.

America will get the E350 and E550 and E63 and eventually the E320 Blutech (CDI). but i haven't got official word, but i know i heard that mercedes is planning the e-class to be the next hybrid now that the s-class hybrid is out in Europe. and after the e-class hybrid, should come a C-class which is Hybrid AND diesel, so expect CRAZY gas mileage. but i also been told they are pressured to push a 4-cylinder (kompressor) by 2010 model for the c-class. they are now testing new ones for american market and possibly (Very small chance) of a diesel c-class.
All kompressor engines is about to end, change to CGI engines with Βlue efficiency technic from this fall.

Climate is very modern in new E class.Thermotronic includes presets and memories.
Also audio50 now is able for 2D maps using DVD in 4.7'' screen, against 3D maps of Command Aps in 7'' screen.

I think this topic has been discussed 6 months ago already. The manual gear box car of course comes with a stick at the centre console. Smaller engines with auto box also have the stick at the centre console (722.6 tranny) but V6 and bigger engines have the steering column selector like 221 (with the 722.9 tranny).

If the 250 CDI (as a Bluetec) would be released to the US, it should come with the traditional gear stick.

By the way, the base model is called "Classic".

The E-class coupe would be a 207, not a 212 body. The more significant C-class parts are not visible, the coupe is actually built on the 204 drive train and suspension (can have a look at EPC for the actual 204 parts).
I just got back from Paris. While there, I stopped by the Mercedes dealership on Champs-Elysees. The new E is much better looking in person, but still can't personally get over the look of the rear-end.
I believe the W212 will come with the carry-over 3.5, 5.5, and 6.3 liter engines, as well as the same V6 bluetec diesel. There is a hybrid in the works. Also, MB released a teaser hinting STRONGLY (If they release a concept car, it means probably yes) that the E250 with a 2.2 litre 4-banger bluetec diesel will make it stateside. This engine may also make it into the W204 and the GLK.

And I wouldn't get your hopes up for a manual transmission.

i doubt the stick e-class too. even the CLS here in America is only available in CLS550 and CLS63. and to the remark about the back end of the e-class, it's true, but when your used to seeing a model and it dramatically changes, you need to get used to it and let it grow. i honestly didnt really like my w221 or w204, but now i look and i love it. and to Mr. Diesel Benz, ur wrong, there is classic (base), then elegance (luxury), then avantgarde (sport).
