I am looking for an alternative to the Pirellis it came with. LA streets bent all four of them up (bulging sidewall bumps).

Check with the tire shop on what they recommend for a tire with stronger sidewalls. I run 18`s on my 420SEL with 35 series tires, and I always have run at least 38-40 psi in the tires, it will ride a little harsher, and the rear tires will wear a little faster in the middle, but it is the best to protect the wheels and sidewalls. You do have a tire pressure monitor system on your SL, but as long as all 4 tires are with 3-4 psi of each other, it will not set it off. I have been running the high presure for several years now, and have not bent any wheels or damaged a tire yet, and I also go through L.A many times.

Michelin PS2+ A/S were recommended, with 500 treaadwear rating, but they are XL, which I'm told is a harder tire, which will come with a harder ride and "isn't recommended for" an SL.

Any experience with the XL thing? Does it matter?

Do not go with the AS tire, yes has a hard compound but we have had major pull problems on those tires. there was a bulletine out a while back from Mercedes on AS on their cars. What ever you put on there will give you the same mileage due to a staggard set up and 500 plus hp. We tune these cars all day long, Tire shop is just trying to push some tires o your car.
