2009 ML350 AC issue - need help troubleshooting

Hello

I have a ml350 4matic 2009 with 55k miles.

The ac has been acting up since last year sporadically. The fan blows but do not blow out cold air. I turning off the car and start again, sometimes it would work again. I read from forum that turning it off ac button for 15 min and turn it back on to allow ice to melt and this method works sometimes. Sometimes i leave it alone and it would start working in 20 min. Eventually it will start working after driving for may be 15 or 20 min based on my observation. During the time that it is NOT working - when i leave the setting to "AUTO" i can hear the Fan blows stronger for 20 seconds, then it blows weaker for 30 seconds, and then blows stronger for another minute.... and from time to time, it just blows the air weaker. I am not sure if this is an indication of something else is wrong.

I have question on following.

1. I saw people mentioning ac fan, is this the same as the big radiator fan right behind the grill? Because that fan does run even with no cold ac air.

2. How do I chk freon level to make sure I have enough freon? I somehow don't think this is the reason but I want to rule it out.

3. About looking at the center but on the compressor - is it expected to turn the moment ac button in dashboard is pressed? I need to check this nut to see if it turns.

4. Anyone from nyc bayside area know of a reputable indy shop around?

5. When some post says, ice is forming inside the condensor, and it needs to be melt before ac to wotk, is this ice formation expected or the problem is it is forming ice blocking certain path? Where can I see or feel there are really ice in the car?

Thanks.

i answered most of my own questions after some researching for past 2 days.

When it is working - the radiator fan does run. and i can feel the low pressure pipe is ice cold.

but i dont understand Why does this happen on a HOT day only?

Right now my guess is there isnt enough freon - but i dont have a gauge to check. I am thinking of buying a can of r134a just to use the gauge to measure.

Thanks.

The car needs to go on a R134a machine.

It should have around 5 bar of pressure with it not working and around 2 bar on the low side and 9-15 bar on the high side.

Don't just put in r134a, after checking system it should be recovered to remove the moisture, and vacuumed down to remove all moisture.

It probably needs a regas but get it done properly by someone who knows what they are doing.

In the UK they have to have a refrigerant handling licence

I've been dealing with the same exact symptoms on my 2008 ML350 for about a year now. I checked the fans, sensors, high/low side pressure, etc and couldn't find anything wrong. I've had a hunch is that this part needs replacement:

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w21...w211-e-class/2617418-w211-ac-compressor-solenoid-valve-change.html#post14247058

However, last month, my AC compressor pulley/bearing finally gave out and was making loud noises when you spin the pulley. So instead of changing just the solenoid valve, I bought a new Denso compressor via Amazon. The compressor replacement wasn't too bad as there's enough room to get to it from the bottom of the car. Getting the drier replaced took me more time than the compressor. Also, keep in mind that anytime the system is opened up, you would need to vacuum out the system. You can rent an AC vacuum pump/gauges from Autozone. I think finding a shop to evacuate the R134a was more of a pain as most shops want to charge extra for evacuation, leak test, and refill. Anyway, it's been a month since replacing the compressor and the AC has been working great for me.
