Okay I know that 2007 was the first year for the 5.5 V8 and there was a rod or something inside the engine that had an issue, and it was up to a certain VIN number. Can anyone fill me in on this? A buddy wants to sell me his 2007 (awesome car) and I want to determine whether that engine is one of the good ones, or whether it needs a retrofit, or what! Many Thanks

To answer my own question engines had balance shaft issues that made timing chain stretch, I believe.
Mercedes-Benz with the improved parts have engine serial numbers that are higher than:

• M272 Engine Serial No. 2729..30 468993
• M273 Engine Serial No. 2739..30 088611

So It looks like the one I am considering is golden. Yay!!

You got it! You can easily check the engine serial number by plugging the VIN into VIN Decoder for Mercedes-Benz
