Am I right in thinking that this model does not have an Aux battery as there is no sensotronic brake system.
I have looked under the bonnet but how do you remove the plastic engine cover over the main engine block.

W211 section would be more appropriate for the question.
No 220cdi was ever sold in USA, but in 320cdi the aux battery is under cabin filter right under the windshield on passenger side.
Obviously since you likely have the steering wheel on passenger side :D it might be reversed in your car.
Do you have manual? I posted link to E320cdi manual in W211 section.

Yes, the answer should be available from the W211 forum but you are right, a facelift W211 does not have any AUX battery any more. The battery was not located under the engine cover but under the dust filter.

I did not check if it is the same with the 220CDI but I assume you just pull it up like on a V6 engine. On older engines the cover was fixed with bolts that were easily visible from the top.
