it can definitely be an issue. i'm actually having a similar issue now i believe, with a bit of a light vibration in 3rd gear under moderate (normal) acceleration that totally disappears after shifting into 4th. Around the 35-40mph area. i think the driveshaft is either out of alignment or out of balance. i would take your whole driveshaft into a driveshaft specialty shop if you have one in your area.

the center support wont need "adjustment". a new one will automatically center the driveshaft where it needs to be, the rest of the shimming needs to be done on the differential end.

I wonder if our lower control arms are different?... i legitimately had 2 broken sections of the bottom most part of the spring sitting in the bottom of that cup when i changed my springs. here's a video i made on it. timestamp for the 2 bits of springs i pulled out, 4:50:

HOLY COW Batman! Those springs were B-A-D. Mine never broke to that degree.

I took a few minutes and jacked my car up to take a photo of the cup in the control arm. It looks the same as yours frankly, but I can see down into it easily all the way around. You can clearly see the end of the spring in this photo and it's easy to follow the spring around with your eyes and hands for inspection.

For vertical angle alignment, there are actually instructions from the Mercedes WIS on shimming under the tranny mounts, the center support mount and the diff. The diff requires MB factory shims, where the tranny and center support are just shop made pieces of sheet metal as described in the WIS.

I have noted a very slight bit of a vibration under lower RPM/heavy torque combination. It is VERY slight. I'd describe it as feeling similar to a bit of u-joint accel/decel sensation. It could be a balance issue as well I suppose. And it could just be worn out drive line parts. Living where I do, I have at least 3 driveshaft balance and repair shops within 30 minutes of me. I'll definitely get it checked for balance when I drop it out.

And since we are discussing all things W211 drive line and I've mentioned the u-joint, there is no mention of the U-joint anywhere in the Mercedes WIS. This is considered non-repairable I am sure, as the caps are staked in and not held in by internal snap rings. However, a drive line repair shop could probably replace them and restake new ones... assuming they could get the right parts. I have to wonder about their condition after 326K miles. Granted, the angle this u-joint is at is so small it should theoretically last about forever provided it retained it's grease. The angle is 0.17 to 1.00 degrees.

Just so you know, I'm really loving this thread. My car will eventually need all of this, too, so it's good to have it documented like this.

Thanks Cowboyt. That is the reason I've done it in a way. It's as much to keep the information for my own restoration in one place as it is to collect the info for others. The repairs I'm doing are probably fairly typical of what is needed for a 05-06 CDI that is in decent shape.

I'm actually feeling like I can see the light is at the end of the tunnel now. Short of the drive line and transmission work, most of the stuff is either minor or optional upgrades. If course, I've got to make a decision on what to do with the paint and minor bodywork which will be the last major hurdle. That's a bit more money. The front of the hood looks like it's got white freckles up close. I actually used to do my own bodywork and painting, but I don't have access to a paint booth any longer... plus paint technology has changed so much.

Do not touch that U joint! Benz is absolutely infamous for making U joints that literally last forever. I have a guy with a 240D that lives by me with 700k miles, original driveshaft and U joint, still tight as new. My CDI is the same story, the U joint is still tight as can be after 460k. replacing those bearing caps are going to open up a can of worms. in this case, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" really does apply.

Hi I’ve just got the 05cdi and like you I’m starting to replace some things. I’m looking for some advice. The Injector noise insulation cover like a foam/sponge cover has deteriorated and I want to replace it.
Do u no a part number or exactly what it’s called. Thanks and best of luck with yours

I think these cars at higher mileage might need new diff bushings and/or subframe. I would think that something has settled or worn through the years and if you bring it back to proper position- the vib will go away. If you are looking for a driveshaft- I think there was a guy on fleabay selling parts from a 97k miles e320. I don't think a driveshaft will ever go "out of balance" but the u-joint. There are quite a few driveshaft places now which can replace the joint and re-balance. Key is finding one that will keep to factory tolerancing.

Nice thread. I have a 2005 E320 CDI with 300K on it now. I just finished replacing the suspension in the front as well as new front wheel hubs and brakes all around. Motor seems to be running well. Recently did a trans flush. I will keep watching to get more ideas on parts to change.

I replaced mine and I only found it through the dealer, even when I had the part number. It's about $50, which is pretty expensive for what it is. It DOES knock down the tapping of the injector sound considerably.
