Hello everyone i'm a new member to this forum. I currently have a Audi A6 Wagon but i'm very interested in purchasing a 06-08 R500. I see a few of them in my area for sale around with 80-100k miles on it. Will I be better off purchasing a R500 with 100k miles or more? Or is it best to purchase one with 80k or lower? From my research it seems parts start to fail on this truck around 80k am I correct?

Help me out guys, Thanks :)

06 with 60k miles and i've owned it for 8 months now. the roominess of the vehicle is why i purchased it. compared to other cars that i have owned this being my first mercedes, i do not think i would buy one again.

great cars but they seem to need a ton of caring. first month i owned needed to have crankshaft, bearings and rod replaced due to excessive wear on bearing leading to a knocking sound under load. sunroof switch no longer functioning and now its -10 F and there is no heat coming into cabin.

the car itself looks like its new, but this is not what i signed up for.

if i sell now i will lose on it. Shame

Ridgeway25, sorry you had that experience. Which R class model do you have? 60K miles with major engine problems is pretty rare but the 3.5 liter engine and some others were notorious for failures and some are involved in a large scale recall. Definitely check on that.

Not sure of the source of the heat delivery problem but could be simple or elaborate to fix.

I’m also a new owner of an R class but have had a 20 year history with mb vehicles.

I did a lot of research, and looked online at probably 80 or so R class vehicles before settling on my r500. I also had 2 taken to dealers for a PPI. I declined on both of those.

I strongly suggest you or anyone shopping for a used car to get a) the lowest mileage example you can find, and/or b) buy from a MB dealer who will offer at least a short term bumper to bumper warranty on the car.

In any event, look at the vehicle master report which shows all of the service details the car has had at MB dealerships. This is way better than a carfax report. Of course a carfax report is also good to show if the vehicle has been in any reported accidents and to verify the number of owners. A 1 or 2 non smoker owner is ideal.

Ideally you want to buy from someone who took their R to the dealership regularly and who was obviously obsessive about the care and feeding of the car. The research takes some time but it is better to buy form someone who went to the dealer regularly and thereby had ongoing dealer level service. As example, the one I bought was taken to a dealership nearly every week for washing and detailing about 4x per year. The previous owner had the oil changed about every 5000 miles, and regular replacement of all the other wearable parts.

I’ve put almost 3k miles on my R500; about 2/3 of that was driving it from the south end of the USA where i bought it, to the north end where my home is. The trip home was a lot of fun. The car is a fabulous, extremely roomy, and a fast hiway platform. It has more cargo space than even a GL class, which is why I bought it.

But with just about any older MB you can expect to spend around a couple of thousand per year on maintenance. That is just the way they are. But if you are willing to keep up with maintenance they are very reliable and last and last and last.

I got me one year ago an R500 5.5l engine, model 2008 (or 2007, not sure) with 150K. So far I only had an issue with the steering wheel liquid which is leaking very slowly. I had to refill it 3 times already as it would start making noise when I turned. Last time, instead of refilling, I added a product that is supposed to "fix" the rubbers and possibly fix the issue. I don't believe too much it'll do, but would be so happy if it did, as I think replacing that part might cost quite a lot.

Rest, I'm set to change the front brakes soon as they're almost completely gone. Got to give it for servicing also (oil) for the first time.

I always drove Japanese cars before and never had a single unexpected issue. My first Mercedes, and yes, it scares me a little... Let's see how it goes.
