Your post belongs in W163 forum.
Open Owners Manual and try to sync key with vehicle.
If it was locked with remote but unlocked with key blade alarm will sound until you put blade in ignition switch and turn it to position 2. That's normal.

 

The remote will not lock or unlock. I tried to sync the key fob with no success.

 

Visit auto parts store. Next to a stand with key batteries they should have test stand that checks key signal.

 

I just had this issue. Changing out the fob cover to a cheepie. I found a good little video that worked for me on the 2000 MMB ML 320 {W163}
1. Insert the key on fob into the ignition and turn on all the way to but not start.
2. Turn ignitinon back to off and remove key/fob.
3. Push and hold the lock button at the same time push the unlock button 5 times.

This was a happy moment for me.

 

Just to add I did this just this weekend fob battery stone dead. it took me three tries to resync it.

Don't know why same procedure each time, third time it took.

 

Persistance my friend, that is what MB has given me.

 

I found that I had to slightly bend the fobs battery contact tabs out a bit, as they seemed to have slackened-off over the years. You can sit there for ages trying to sync a fob that isn't putting out any signal due to weak battery contacts.
