Sitting at a stop light about a mile from my house, and all the sudden BOOM, engine shuts off. I try and restart, nothing. turn flashers on. guy behind me gets out of his car, tells me im POURING fuel on the road. Sure enough, while the tank pump was running, id pumped a couple gallons out on on the road. leak is coming from right under the tank on the drivers side of the vehicle.

Get the car towed home, pop off the rear most drivers side plastic panel, and take a look up there.
here's what i found:

BOTH rubber hoses pictured below, the "tank side" of the hose clamps had completely rusted off. the pipe coming from the tank had popped out! moisture had gotten trapped under that plastic panel rusted those hose clamps to dust. super easy fix, just put new hose clamps on.

long story short, you guys might want to check your hose clamps in that area, its a weak spot in the fuel delivery because of the moisture that can get trapped under there. ALSO, there's a brake line under there that was starting to get rusty. i coated it in rust preventor before i buttoned everything back up.

"Somebody was here before"
Couple of those clamps are not MB clamps.
Than unfortunately quality of materials in MB is dropping.
Father's MB still has original, 30 years old hoses.

The title is misleading, didn't really even notice that till now.

Nothing ruptured, the tube just popped out of the hose due to the the 130PSI pressure from the tank pump.

And I do believe you're right on those 2 hose clamps not being original, I suspected that myself.
Benz never used traditional hose clamps anywhere on the entire fuel system, they use those stainless snap lock clamps. So I don't think this ever would have happened if those original clamps we're still there.

Just FYI as well, the rubber down there is still nice and firm. It's not hard like plastic, and it's not super squishy like you see on some of the older diesels. So the hoses are still in good shape.
