I bought a low mile (77,000 mile) 2004 E500 for what I thought was a great price. I noticed a thumping sound from the rear passenger corner and whenever I went over the right kind of bump the car would leap sideways. I had my indy mechanic replace both rear shocks and that cured the thumping sound but the car still leaps sideways over certain types of bumps. Generally it's just annoying but on wet roads it's actually dangerous. The rear tires seem to suffer excessive wear and there has never been an airmatic warning light. I took it back to my indy and they could not find anything missing, loose or broken. They did seem to think it might be a leveling or height sensor. The other day a friend got into the car while I was watching and I noticed the front compensate and the rear did nothing. I searched the forums for similar issues but in most cases it involved a ride height warning or car sagging. By the way, the ride is atrocious.
