Hello everyone, in need of some assistance. I have a 2003 E320 sedan, I can smell gas fumes in the car after I fill up with gas - not topping off, and no fuel leaking. Also note that my gas like blinks after a while and I also get a console warning that my gas cap is loose. I am using Shell premium gas, or Chevron Premium. Also the check engine light came on - took in for Smog and maint, and got the diag codes of P0442 and P0455...mechanic seems to think my evaporative canister is leaking....any ideas/suggestions of other things I could or should check?

I would buy a new MB gas cap to see if that helps. I don't know if the gasket is available separately or replaceable.

P0442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

P0455 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak)

He might be right about the cannister based on the above.

Also MB calls your car a W211 and there is a dedicated forum for those. Look in the sedans section. Your issue could be common and if so, has probably been discussed and solved somewhere there.

<edit> I just searched for "gas smell" on the W211 forum and several threads popped up. Some people had to have their fuel tanks replaced and there seems to be an issue with the filler necks. Some state laws mandate a 7/70,000 emission systems warranty so you might get lucky.
