In need a few questions answered. I recently purchased a very clean, low miles '03 cl600 from a Mercedes dealership. The dealer listed the engine as 6.0L V-12. The carfax report I viewed after the purchase listed the engine as a 5.5L V-12. I tend to believe it is the 5.5L V-12. Does anyone know if the '03 cl600 came as both a 5.5L and a 6.0L?

I have also noticed that many (if not all) cl600 are bi-turbos. Are all '03 cl600bi-turbos? Additionally, the rear of my car has an AMG moniker on the trunk. Other '03 cl600's I have seen in pictures do not have the AMG moniker. What is the deal with the AMG designation? Obviously not all cl600's are AMG.

Any insight would be helpful.

If it was an AMG it would be badged as such, but also say CL55 (5.5 liter, supercharged, 8 cylinder). I think the CL600 (as well as the S600) are both bi-turbo 6.0 liter, 12 cylinder. If MB ever produced a 5.5 liter 12 cylinder, I have never heard of it.

There are a lot of people who place an AMG badge on their cars for status. I think that's what probably happened. If you are in further doubt, call MBUSA (800-FOR-MERC) and give them your VIN. I have found them to be very helpful.

Congratulations on your car and welcome to the forum!

MY03+ CL600s have a 5.5L Bi-turbo V12. Pre-facelift models (before 2003) had a 5.8L naturally aspirated V12.

The previous owner must have placed the AMG badge on the rear of the trunk because he was a poseur. The only AMG model W215 CL-Classes are the CL55 and CL65.

Thanks for your clarification too AsianML. It looks like I'd better stop trusting my memory on cars I've never owned... :)

Not to worry. I had to look up the information on the pre-facelift V12. I could've sworn that one was 6.0L, but I guess I was wrong. Apparently the V12 before that was 6.0L.

Thanks my friend. I think it's somewhat curious that in 2003 the CL600 got an "improved" engine with its' facelift as did both the 1st year 2003 W211 E500 and E55.
