is there a big difference in handling/driving
between the V8 models between those years ?
Not really. In 02, MB basically redesigned the vehicle in and out and changed from a ML430 to the ML500 with a bigger V8 and, I believe, wider tires. The ML500 got heavier and peppier and, though I have not driven a 430 that much, the 500 does not handle any much better than the ML430. It's ergonomics are better, it rides better with the wider rubber, but with no suspension changes that I know, those extra pounds don't do much for handling depsite the larger V8.

I had a 2000 430 and now have a 2005 500SE. I can say the 2005 seems to be built better. The 2000 had what I call a lateral roll or wobble which you had to correct for on uneven roads or in a crosswind. The 2005 500 has none of this. They both have the same size tires 275/55/17. Grandtrek 35's on the 2000 and SP 5000's on the 2005. I have to say the handling is more precise from a steering standpoint, although they both ride like trucks because I always have 35# of air in the tires. I've been told the 2002 and on up have several suspension changes including softer springs. I actually liked both of them, with the 2005 being the better one. [8D]
