Background, Purchased 6 months ago with intermittent starting issues, sometimes search error, most of the time turn key no crank. I found the push button DIY thread and started reading. I decided to use toggle switches and a push button for the starter and work out the bugs before doing all the wiring for the remote push start. Now I have eliminated the search error (disassembled key fob zip tied to transponder ring, and key in to prevent steering lock) and the starter has a direct connection to 12v via the push button but it will not start on the first crank. In my video you can see the tac jump on the second attempt and the truck starts. Sometimes it takes several attempts before the tac jumps and truck starts. Flame suit on for not providing enough info to diagnose over the net.

Is it the passive entry type of keyless go or have you just installed a push start button.

If it happens every time, it's probably loss of fuel pressure. You can check it by connecting a gauge.

I think the tacho needle movement is irrelevant. As long as it's moving, it's OK.

Correct it will never start on the first try. Tac jumps everytime before start, doesn't matter if it's the 2nd attempt or 5th. Fuel pressure is good. 55# with ignition on, 60# when running. Stays above 50# after shutdown.

Get your codes read. I had an intermittent false start problem (=start on 2nd try) that turned out to be a faulty O2 sensor. There are other causes.

P0335 CPS & P0221 throttle switch B. I believe I caused both while testing starting conditions. I have hit the starter too quickly & it failed to engage causing cel, also I cranked it with the throttle cracked once causing a cel. Tac does move on first crank so I haven't ordered a cps yet, I'll test it with a meter if I must. Cel is off and I haven't seen it while driving, put about 50 miles on it today and I have to say it kicks my wife's new crv's butt. Same issues starting hot.

It's possible that faulty CKP sensor could cause this. I've heard that the P0335 code self-clears after engine start, so you need to read the codes between the 1st & 2nd attempts.

It clears after successful start with ME 2.0. 2002 ML500 has ME 2.8. Code for L5 gets stored and will not self clear.

The ECM does the tests, and the CKP sensor failed, so you should replace it. Expect starting problem to be solved immediately afterwards.

Use Bosch brand only.

Thanks for the tip on the Bosh brand.? I have one in my Rock Auto cart along with some other maintance items.
The PO rewired the fans to constant on. I plan to require the factory circuit. I saw this in the common issues thread along with many other issues I'm going to have to work on at some point.
