Check engine light again coming on. Dealership says isolated tank from system and feel tank is bad. Wants 3200. to replace. Anyone else ever needed replacement tank ? We've had a number of CEL issues over the past few years but
none were ever this major.

What does this mean?..........Dealership says isolated tank from system and feel tank is bad.

What is the code # that is causing the CEL to come on?

When I had that issue the filler cap was replaced, still a gross leak detected. Ran a smoke test and it was coming out from the pump area.
Pulled the rear seat and the sealing ring for the pump/sender was cracked. Luckily I kept my old sealing ring and the problem was fixed.

Since you failed to get the code number/s you will have to take it to an independent mechanic to have the codes read.

Didn't they give you a bill?
I just authorized the tank replacement. Due to a family relationship this is a dealership we trust. They've had the ML the past 10 days checking all the simple stuff until this tank test failure. Why me :)

Because the only reason one would change the tank if it is cracked.......which is almost unheard of.....
You opened this thread asking for help/advice. You were asked to get the codes or go to a indie & rescan the car...Them Matt & Noodles told you that there could be a number of reasons for a leak in the tank area. Inspite of everything you tell us that you told the dealer to go ahead & change the tank....
Why I claimed that? Because we know dealers way too well.......
Do a search in the forum & find out how many people have changed their tanks.....
And if I managed to convince you, have the car scanned & post the codes so you may get "genuine" help.

I know it is rare, which is why I put up the post, but chit happens and as previously stated this on going CEL has been an intermittant issue for a long time and the dealership has had it several times. Getting a code from another wasn't an option cause it's already at the dealer, my kid who drives this 500 has one of their loaners; now at school, and although your statement of "we know dealers ...... " may in fact hold true to some of them, I also stated that this one is family where I've been buying cars & having them serviced for probably about 20 years. When a tank doesn't hold pressure the tank is bad I don't care what error codes the system does or doesn't provide. Thanks for your help.

What if the $3200 does not fix the problem and it was just sensor in the filler neck? I hope I am wrong,
but I have a feeling the dealer over diagnosed the problem to slam dunk their repair.

I really wish I had the kind of disposable income to have a kid in college and hand a dealer $3200.

Perhaps the brand new tank will also include a new gas cap and fuel pump sealing ring.....problem solved! IMHO a "cracked" gas tank, which is under pressure, would be leaking fumes at a minimum, possibly also wet fuel depending upon the location of the crack. If bad enough to generate a CEL.....I think I could smell the fumes....on a windy day.....no?

I also had a cracked seal ring. Not sure if the ML has one but I'm pretty sure it has something of the sort; an LDP pump! That could be bad. I find it hard to believe it is a leaking fuel tank. You would smell it if it was that gross. My seal had a hair line crack and didn't trip any lights but I can tell you i smelled it.

This repair would be half the value of the car wouldn't it? If they haven't done the job I would be investigating it a bit more and pulling it out of there, family or not.
