I just recently purchased a really nice condition 2002 E55. It has 210k miles and is still a beast. One thing I notice though is that the ride quality is terrible. It has newer bilstein shocks all around and brand new Cooper tires on the monoblocks and you can feel every little crack in the road. Its bone jarring how hard it rides. Is this normal? I had a 1996 and a 1999 e300 diesel before and they rode very nice. Im wondering if I swap out the shocks to basic w210 shocks if this would help?

I replaced the stock shocks with Koni Yellow Sport shocks when I got mine. They are adjustable and they are currently set to the softest setting. I really didn't see much of a difference in ride quality. The tires on it are a very cheap brand and I'll change them out to a high performance all season someday, but I doubt it will make much difference on the ride. If I'm driving on a lot of broken pavement, it's pretty stiff and jarring. But on the highway and smoother roads it feels great. I would love to see others comment on what they have done to smooth out the bumps. But from what I have read in other posts, this is just how they ride.

Need more history/details.
No mention of the present status of your springs.
"newer bilsteins" is a broad term - be specific on the model.

I have no idea on history. I just bought the car 2 weeks ago and the p.o. said he replaced them. I just replaced the outer tie rods last night and the shocks are yellow but look very old. As for springs... I have no idea about them either. I can only "assume" they are original.
I lowered the tire pressure and it rides much better.

Mileage?
Replaced what?
I don't believe an E55 would ride (as rough as you stated) unless of course the springs have either been cut, swapped to a non-oem spring. As for the shocks, oem was not yellow - aftermarket is a good hunch.
What tire pressure?
Tire pressure should be the specs as noted on the inside of the door jamb.

Buying a car with no history, especially an E55?
hummm.
