Hey Guys,I presently have a 1995 C220 and am looking at buying a 2002 C240 with about 140,000km. or 85,000 miles on it.I don't know much about these and would appreciate any input on what to look for or pay specific attention to.
Thanks for any help.

You need to go to the w203 forum for the experts on that car. Be careful inspecting those cars because C Classes from that time period are known to be problematic so you need a car that has been sorted out already.

Don't bother with a W203. Too many problems. Stick with a W202 or jump straight to a W204 :)

From what I have read,it sounds like there is quite a few issues with the C240.What do you know about the E class or CLK class?

I don't know much about the car... and I haven't heard bad things about it, but I did hear that the original factory fuel pump in some models (C180) had a tendency to pack up. So check if there have been previous fuel pump problems and if they have been rectified.

Other than that, I think the car is a good one. C240 engine is brilliant, very fast, but with all over-electronic-ised modern engines... every component and sensor has to be 100% for it to work.

If MB has done the last service, it should be fine. Perhaps even take the car to MB and put it on the diagnostic machine just to check if there are any error codes, before buying the car.

There's nothing bad I can say about the W202 C240's actually. In the 3 years I've had my 2000 C240 (W202), I haven't had to replace anything other than the tyres, and it's closing in on 100,000km on the odometer. It's a very nice car, good city driver, good mileage, and when you need the power, there's plenty of it when you step on it.

My brother also has a C240 (1998), and has had no problems either, other than his MAF sensor playing up (he's replaced it and now it's good as new).

Can't really comment on the W203 C240's specifically, though. All I can say is that almost everyone I've talked to has told me to steer clear of the W203's completely. Even the people at my local MB dealership have told not to bother with them.

The W210 E-Classes are pretty good as well, although I'd recommend going for the facelifted W210's (I think they are 2000 onwards?). My dad has a 2002 E280, and it's brilliant. Very solid build, good gas mileage, and when you drive it, you can definitely feel and tell it's a class above the C-Class (not that I'm complaining about my W202 haha, I wouldn't want anything else ;)).

Hope that helped :)

Can't help you on the CLK though, I'm afraid.

>>C240 engine is brilliant, very fast,<<

There must be a difference from the U.S. models then. They only had around 170 hp in the U.S.

No, it's 170hp here in NZ as well. And that's pretty quick for my standards already :p

It might not've been as quick off the line as my old '94 C280, but once you get going, it's quite quick (ie: it's still a breeze passing others on the motorway etc.)

I'm not complaining :D
