Hello,
I have a 2001 E320 that will not shift out of first gear. The check engine light is also on (I haven't gotten the codes yet). I can go from Park to reverse to neutral and drive. But I can not manually down shift or upshift. It has a very pronounced thud when I shift into drive or reverse.

The car has 165000 miles and has been well maintained. I have not spilled anything on the center console. I heard that this caused similar issues.

Any ideas or thoughts? Next steps?

Thanks!

You need diangnostic codes to move forward. if you need to putter a bit in the meantime, you can check the tranny adapter plug and TCM for fluid leakage/contamination as prt of the process.

^^+1^^

Another common fault for a Limp Home lockup is failure of the speed (turbine) sensors located in the conductor plate that sits on top of the valve body. A complicated DIY, but not impossible.

Can't do anything substantial until codes read and erased - however, checking communication erros on the adpater plug (replacement $12 part) and TCM check for fluid a good play until more is know. The PO715 speed sensor is common, but you really can't trust the code until you confirm the communication adapter/TCM are clear.

Carsten - sounds like you have a different problem than the OP. His was a speed sensor on the conductor plate located inside the transmission - yours appears to be due to shorting out the circuit board just beneath the shifter.

Here is a link describing the similar experience and repairs of others:
