Hello everyone - thanks in advance for taking the time to read through this.

I have a 2000 SLK230 Hard Top that I bought used last year. Only 117,000 miles on it at the time and the ONLY thing it needed was the engine mounts replaced - my mechanic checked her out and said she was a gem! Have to say, she hasn't disappointed - Her name is "Bad Betty", BTW ;)

Anyhow - went to open the top about a month ago - no go. Center console switch just blinks red - no sounds/noises - nothing - just the blinking. Then - realized my power window controls aren't working either. However - if I pull back twice (quickly, then hold back on the second) on the hard top control switch, both windows will come down. They will come back up if I do the same in the reverse (push up twice quickly and hold on the switch). Checked the hydraulic fluid and had to add some, replaced a relay switch with new - still no go. Took it to my mechanic. He said he couldn't even "talk" to the control module so it must be that. Sent it to a company to have them rebuild it, got it back - still no go. Tried buying a used one on ebay - again - no go. However - when I put the ebay module in, there was absolutely no change to anything. Car reacted the same as I describe above. So.....is it really the module?

Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Also - is it true that any module I get would have to be programmed to my car at the dealership? I found some new modules online in the $400 range, but if it still has to be programmed.....

Thanks again for your input. Really appreciate any advice you can give.

If you have an R170 you need a diagnostic system that will read all faults or a bottomless wallet. Fault finding by replacing components will quickly cost more than the car is worth. I have a Chinese clone of Carsoft that reads vario roof faults, but it's maybe 10+ years old- I don't know what's available these days. It's important the diagnostic equipment reads all systems including the roof, HVAC, transmission etc. , not just the engine.
