What are the long term ramifications in terms of wear and tear for removing the Front driveshaft on an ML 320?

Please share your thoughts and experiences.

I've made it two years and some change trouble free since I removed mine after my transfer case took a dump. Still debating whether or not to go back to a 4x4 setup.

You run a RWD ML? I've been wondering if this was possible, and today I learned it was. How does the car handle before/after? Can you do burn outs now? How is handling in snow? Any error codes/check engine? Post a pic of the underbody?

I can't really think of any wear and tear ramifications to be honest because making the car RWD wouldn't affect anything negatively really I think. I could be wrong.

2+3 is 5.
I really think it is.
Addition sign could be a multiply in disguise though.
I could be wrong.
 ;)

Im not sure if your post is commenting on something incorrect I said, or the fact that I proposed an idea and then conceded it may be wrong due to my lack of knowledge as compared to some on this forum...

Since the ML's transfer case is an open differential this is not even possible.
Remove front drive shaft and you go nowhere.
OP, more information on how you did this if this post was not just a joke.

I was thinking the same when I first read the post. The only way to make this possible would be to somehow lock the front driveshaft flange on the transfer box, otherwise, removing a drive shaft would result in no drive to any of the wheels.

It's faster. I need two new tires and a center driveshaft carrier support bearing.

It's a lot like driving a sedan at times. The traction control works in the rear.

I think driving in wintry conditions would be a huge mistake. I'll try to make some pics.

Right now there are a lot of people doubting you. Can you give us the process you used to convert it? This is pretty much unheard of. Post some pics of the undercarriage. What did you do? Use parts off an W210 or something?

The transfer case has a drive shaft that goes back up front. Remove driveshaft and you'll have no front wheels pulling plus your transfer case wouldn't function either. When my drive shaft and center support was replaced on the 99 ML430, he had the front shaft removed to do the u-joint. We were seeing if there were other driveline noises so we tried to put it in gear without the front drive shaft in. It revved up like it was in neutral. So, if you remove transfer case and modify a drive shaft to go straight to rear, I can see that happening. A lot of work though. I'd rather just replace the transfer case.

I notice the OP answered the frivolous questions but ignored the direct questions - e.g. what did he do, show some photos etc.

I'm betting :

(a) it's a poor joke,
(b) he thinks the shafts have been removed but they haven't, or
(c) he thinks he drives an ML but he doesn't.

Either way, on balance, assume this thread is not worth following until such time as he backs up what he claims.

Posted 2 days ago on the W124 forum ....

I'm choosing to do a M104 supercharger E320, 1988 300E V8 swap, and 1988 300E turbo. One of each:thumbsup:

It's going to take some time though.
