Well, as far as I understand it there are no differences between 1998 and 1999 V12, but let's see what cognoscenti think...

Are there any differences between 1999 and 1998?

The only ones that possibly occur to me are (MAVA?) were there any differences in the 722.6 and to all, is the AC Evaporator more reliable in 1999 vs 1998?

Over to you guys...

It's always been my understanding that 99's were built with remaining 98 parts. With the exception of the "Grand" edition S500's. W220's went on sale in 1999 for European markets

Yes, for the W140 in general there is no actual ‘1999’ model year.

For 1999 Mercedes simply continued the 1998 production run for a few more units and sold them in the US as 1999 models.

The ROW got the W220 in 1999.

The center console cover door went to a split one some time in 1998 and continued in 1999.

Yes, it is correct that 1999’s CL600’s and S600’s were made of remaining parts of 1998’s. And the reason is correct: w140 production ceased in mid-1998, as the earliest production w220’s started late 1998 for Euro-delivered 1999’s. The US market has traditionally been a year behind the MB home markets.

This all makes sense, thank you. I spoke with MAVA and he confirmed there is no difference in the 722.6 either between 1998 and 1999.

Stryker, do you have any specific information, or perhaps better, can you ask the powers that be, about when the metals in the Evaporator were corrected/ updated to avoid the corrosion issue that plagued earlier MY 140's. I am certain that change did occur, both because I was advised of such, and also because both my current W140's, as 1998 and 1999, have had no AC Evaporator issues and yet both are approaching 200,000 miles with original evap.; so I believe that issue must have been corrected by either early or possibly mid 1998?

You have tremendous connections, so I hope you may be able to find out for all of us on this one, so the corrected / updated evap. change date question can be put to bed once and for all...

As far as the evap issue is concerned, I think the issue is that Mercedes had more than one vendor for the units and one of them produced the 'bad' ones with dissimilar metal corrosion issues, and the other produced the better ones. Later in production the other vendor was phased out, so the later cars have fewer issues.

But generally it's a crapshoot; some cars have them fail in relatively short order (my first W140 had the evap fail at 35,000 miles while the car was still under factory warranty) and some go on basically forever.

I don't think, however, there was a hard date that Mercedes officially 'fixed' the issue. At least not one the general public is aware of. I think it's more that post-facelift cars are less likely to have bad evaporators than pre-facelift ones. Although I think even that is anecdotal.
