Went to the store and came back. After an hour went to go out and the car just cranks, doesn’t start-please help.

You need to hook up gauge on Schrader valve on top of the engine.
In emergency you can just push the valve with sharp object to check if there is any pressure, but be careful about gasoline spray.
Sometimes better leave such things to professionals.

the one time our '98 e430 stranded us (at the bottom of the driveway), it was a failed fuel pump...

thanks for that tip, kajtek! this was early in my stewardship of the car and i ended up having it towed to a local shop.

Check if the fuel pump is whirring when someone puts the ignition key in, and turns it to position 2 (the last position before start). The fuel pump is at the rear driver's side, just behind the rear wheel. It could be electrical (relay, fuse, ECU, K40 module, CPS)...).

Thanks for the info-I will try and see if it’s the fuel pump. Thx.

Hi-how do I check to see if it’s the crankshaft position sensor?

Maybe you can check with MB test equipment. Otherwise replace it with a new or known good one. Many times the CPS fails with no CEL.

Definitely not a bad idea because eventually that will fail if not already. Are the symptoms similar to what I’m having? It cranks, but doesn’t start at times?
thx in advance.

you can also read up on a few threads by searching for CPS or in the STICKY under
"Crankshaft Position Sensor" to see how the reported symptoms compare to yours
