Check your fuel tank cap. If I'm not mistaken the blinking light indicates an EVAP system fault, and if the problem persists the check engine light will illuminate.

The andrew is correct. Evaporative emission system major leak. You should have a P0455 fault code.

Here is my adventure with this code. It was all my fault in the end.

Of course, my engine is the V12. Your V8 will have all the same evaporative emissions system parts but laid out differently. The leak could be anywhere including the gas cap. Good luck tracking it down.

In that case find a friend with a smoke machine, should cut your time in half finding a leak.

95% failed gas cap seal. i had that happen to me at 3am in the middle of some hick town. gas gauge then decided to do the dance routine. i thought it was the sending unit but no.. depressurized tank will cause all sorts of symptoms

depending on severity/lenght of you driving it like that it might trigger the cel with a weird unrelated code.

change the cap and go from there before you go on a wild goose line hunting

I just had a Gas gage light flashing this morning. It is getting cold in the morning. Before I left for work I started my Benz and 15 minutes when I got inside the car I noticed that Gas gage light was flashing. I turned the engine off and turned it back again and flashing was gone.

1998 S420 benz problem code p0455 evaporator bi... - JustAnswer

Also had code P0455 , I didn't even have to replace the purge valve (has MOT on top of it), just simply took it off and sprayed some WD-40 in the valve, let it dry out and hooked it back up. Apparently they gunk up and get stuck. Seems to have fixed the problem. Car even runs betters.
