Id check with magna flow or flow master for the appropriate universal cat. If you buy from Benz, you'll spend two grand .:D

Cat converters for the SL600

Thanks for all the answers, at one point I felt that, you can only use the ones from MB. So, is not a problem using other brands, my SL600 is not a California model. Thanks all.

nope its not a problem to use a good aftermarket cat. get a decent brand though like magnaflow or flowmaster ,which has already been suggested.

What makes you think they need to be replaced btw ??

Cat con replaacement

Got a code P0422, the shop here in Ft. Lauderdale found the cats to be nearly plug up, the try to see if they can unplug or clean them up, not sure; they advised me of the need in the very near future for some new cats. After they try to work on them, the performance went up quite a bit.

Cats" are not repairable or refillable. They do wear out. My cats rattled, the ceramic matrix cracked from a "deer Strike" event.:( The Benz price was much higher than others mentioned but the chemical reaction is the same.

But your car won't sound the same if you go with aftermarket cats. At least in my case I bought an aftermarket for about $700 and it sounded like a honda. Plus the fit was dubious (prybar needed on assembly to get the thing to mate properly. I returned it and got an OEM for $1300 and it was back to its old self. YMMV

A. Here are the converters for a 49 state vehicle: MagnaFlow Catalytic Converters - 49-STATE & CANADA Catalytic Converters For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles U

and if it's a California vehicle, we don't have any certified applications.

Original cat's are ceramic core types, worst kind, but at the time they were cheap, heave and bulky.

I have been running for 3 years on universal spun metal core 200 CPI cat's and I pass inspection every year in Sweden. They are light weight, small, nicer sound and looks much nicer.

Conclusion, any cat's that is ceramic core is crap, but at the time it was the only option, get a metal core instead.

CAt replacement with OEM

After much searching and talking with other SL owners I desire to go with the OEM cats, quite pricey, but that was the best way for me; the car runs like new and I have no regrest spending all that cash for peace of mind, ( of course the wife has no idea).

Not to put you down, everyone makes their own decision about their things, I tend never to go with the flow...

And I too would like to know how much it sets you back.

My Point of view is, something that wasn't really good mid -90 is still not good, it is not a quality Product if you add 15 years of development to it. Simply, I want what is best, MB cannot deliver that.

Sonn starting 500 km drive North in Sweden, guess the weather is better in South FL.... =P

REplacing the cats with OEM

Around $3.600.00. I know it was a lot, specially when you're not a well to do taxpayer, but, I felt the need to go with the OEM for peace of mind (with yellow lights); this SL is a keeper, and to stay with OEM parts as far as possible; when they did the cats, they also replace the 2 flex-disk at each end of the drive shaft (the flex discs were dry). I found thatFlowmaster made some cats for these cars to comply with Kalifornia, and the price was about $896.00 each.

The same in Sweden, if it is a keeper, price really doesn't matter, I never tend to go for the cheapest, I get what I want instead. Tell them to replace the support bearing for the drive shaft, cost nothing and if they are going to do the discs it is a good thing to do.

I just took the old cats off and gutted them leaving the exhaust open. It feels like a big increase in performance. The check engine light stays on but I don't care.
