As far as I know, the 1997 does not have the 'disintegrating' harness due to bio-degradable plastic insulations. So may be your mechanic was referring to something else (but how can he sees into the future I don't know).
But if he was implying your 1997 has the bio-degradable harness that may have problem in the future, then he doesn't know much about the R129.

Yes, it varies by model but for the SL500SLs it was the LH engine years - 93 to 95.

You are right: years between 1993 and 1995 usually will have wiring harness problems for sure sooner or later.
