Hi all,

I have a question that I cannot find the answer to on the search function.
My inner drive shaft joint boots both sides seem to be leaking grease. I'm not getting any noise but I noticed it when I was about to change the fuel filter.
Does anyone know how simple this is to fix and what parts are required? The rear diff was rebuilt when I bought the car so I don't need to worry about that.

Thanks,
Craig

Model and year? Swing axle?

Can you describe the bands that hold the boots?

Without going into very old history, just do a simple search on "Mercedes swing axle boot replacement". I see kits for under $20.

[Well, a bit of old history. In the olden days the bands which hold the boots were one-piece and crimped on using Magneform. I was involved in that process and visited a plant in Germany when the process was still in use. This was the 1970 era. I'm sure all the Magneform machines are in the scrap heap and the bands are no longer a simple one-piece band.]

I took a look at the ratings of the split boots and there are some bad ratings. They have to be glued and there is some experience of them pulling open after a while.

Just as a guess, you might be able to use the boots you have and just replace/tighten the bands. Beyond that it's "Pull the shafts".

I have never had that problem (that I know of) and the last time the car was on a hoist at a dealer they said all was well. At my age I don't get down on the ground nor jack up the car so I rely on others. I will have an oil change soon and that will be a good time to have the underside stuff checked.

Good luck and I hope others who have dealt with your problem will come in with suggestions.
