1996-1999 SL600's Are there differences in qQuality?

I am just about to pull the trigger and purchase one of several 600's. Do the 1999 have a beefier transmission? Did the 1996 have a weaker trans? Are the fit and finish all about the same?
Any responses are greatly appreciated.
