yesterday I noticed the car idling rough when in gear. It seemed to be missing. When I put it in neutral and revved it up it stopped missing. I drove it around for about 45 minutes to an hour and within that time it got progresively worse and was missing and even backfiring at times under excelleration. The engine check light has not come on or any other dash lights.
I have a homemade reader for the 38 pin plug

questions.
where to start looking?
Will the 38 pin give me codes on my homemade reader?
Under the dash is a obd connector. Is this OBD1 or OBD2 or both?
what would be a good reader to purchase should I need one?
Any other ideas?

The car was built 9/95

How is the condition of your engine compartment wiring harnesses? Beyond that, it kind of sounds like typical heat soak ignition problems. Possibly ignition coils, spark plug wires, distributor rotor and cap.

95 S320 is one of the pre-96 OBDII "test bed" cars for Mercedes. It has OBDI and II systems.

Mine is October 95 car and has OBDII, but sold as 96. It even has 722.5 transmission found only in 96 S320.
