Hi I just got a 1995 c280. Abs light is on and speedometer isn't working everything I've read indicates a sensor. I have no idea where to look for these sensors on my car and what I've found online has not been helpful. I am heading to a scrapyard to pull a few parts today and would love to add these sensors to the list (hoping to avoid buying new) but not knowing where to find them or what I'll need to remove them is becoming a frustrating problem. Can anyone help with This? Pictures would be great but even just verbal instructions regarding where to find them and how to remove them would be ever so lovely. Digitized copies of appropriate pages from the service manual would be amazing. I've never owned a German car and I only dabble at working on vehicles as it is so I'm pretty lost currently. However I really do want to do this myself!

the front sensors are mounted into the back of steering knuckle, protruding into the spindle. The rear ABS sensor will either be mounted into the differential, or will have the same setup as the front, depending on whether ESP is equipped or not.

Just look for wires going into the steering knuckle. There are only 2, one goes to the brake pad (brake pad wear indicator, only on front brakes), the other is the ABS sensor (also called wheel speed sensor).

There are multiple wheel speed sensors and there is no way to determine which sensor is defective with out a scanner. If you are going to keep this vehicle and do your own repairs I suggest you purchase an iCarsoft Mecedes II scanner. You will find it invaluable. I would also suggest a digital manual. They are inexpensive in ebay. By the way, not only can a wheel speed sensor cause your issue, but also an ABS brake module may also cause the same symptoms. Also, if you do replace a defective sensor, you will have to clear the fault codes - which requires a scanner or a trip to the dealer or a Benz shop.

Is the iCarsoft Mercedes II scanner the best bang for the buck for the w202? I can not seem to find it in ebay, maybe you can send a link if possible?

Thanks for the info on the scanner as well as the other possible cause of the problem! I do plan on keeping it around awhile so will probably invest in this as soon as funds allow. I have an obd2 scanner that I used bunches on my previous car to diagnose problems so I know the value of these things. Unfortunately this car requires the obd1 scanner so my old scanner is useless.

Yes. Less expensive scanners will not read all the modules. This one will. I have used it several times on my W209.

By the way, try this link to get all the information about your MB.

Thanks for the info. I gathered that it cannot scan older w202s. Mine is a 1997 model with delvery date Feb 1996 based on VIN, By the way, what is paint code 1? I'm sorry if I am already out of topic
