It all sounds temperature related.

Did the car start once the engine had cooled again? i.e. After the school run?

I don't know whether your particular model is equipped with a crankshaft position sensor but I'm working on the theory that it might be faulty.

If you have an OBDI code reader see if you can extract any codes during the 'no-start' episodes.

ps.

Also, how is your battery?

I understand that cold weather does strange things to a battery which is only operating at marginal efficiency.

If you're not getting any sparks, then I would think that you could test the ignition coil. This site gives instructions on how to do so using a multimeter: Bad Ignition Coil Symptoms | eHow.com

If you don't have a multimeter, I think you can get an analog one for around $10 at the home depot.

Your model is susceptible to a bad wiring harness. Check the wires to the coils. They degrade and cause electrical problems.

it's OBD2. Most parts stores will run the codes if you don't have a reader.
Sounds like your on the right track with the coil pack or wiring harness
