Engine making a tapping sound which increases/decreases in tempo with acceleration even while standing still. Any ideas?

Yep, classic popped end cap on the plastic cam oiler tube.

Seen it many times, even under warranty at the dealer back in the day.

Here's 2 tubes, one good, the other with the end cap/plug gone.

As gator said, an update to early aluminum versions is a wise decision
considering all that work to replace them.
