Was looking at a 94 600 SL. Problem is that is will not start, guy said it ran when he got it but will not now. It turns over but will not start. I have worked on the 560's but never the 600. I have read they are pretty expensive to fix. Was just woundering if there is something I should be looking for or is is just money pit waiting to happen.

Pit.

Insist that the car runs first (good advice for purchasing any car, unless you are interested in yard art).

Pit, ( for me I needed to spread money into the economy!) but maybe a good add to your collection.
If turn over but no ignition, that is a simple search. Spark, fuel would be my starting points. Wiring issues would be the big expense. Suspension is not simple with the 600, but it is nice when it works.
The work on the 560 and 280 engine was still auto 101. The R129 has many systems into CPU's, so my old methods with screw driver and slip pliers just doesn't do the job! All the parts are MB so you already know quality is not cheap! ;)

Aw come on you light weights ! Where else can you get a $ 130,000.00 car for 5 percent of it's original cost ? That leaves you with $ 125,000.00 for repairs. Pretty good value ! Barring something mechanically catastrophic, as the previous post said, give it spark and fuel and it should run! Try a shot of starting fluid. If it fires, it's a fuel issue. Perhaps as simple as out of gas? Fuel pump seized, dead etc. Fuel pump relay? If you have no spark, that can be tons of electrical issues. Start by going thru fuses, module connections etc. You have 2 totally distinct distributors, rotors, coils etc, so that points to a control module issue. At that point, I'd scan the diagnostics for a clue.
There is nothing like a 600 ! They are not for the mechanically or financially challenged. If you can't research and bird dog gremlins, or write hefty checks for someone else, perhaps a 600 is not your cup of tea.
What condition, color, miles etc? I'm looking for one in red :D

600SL

Talked to the guy some more and it was a daily driver up untill a week ago. Claim engine, trans all strong. Claims it's electrical,a MB mechanic thinks it maybe a selonoid that cost around a grand installed. He does not want to gamble if it would be wrong he would be out a $1000. The guy is not real mechanical and can't pass on what he was told very well. Car will not fire at all at this point. Sounds like it was a sudden thing vs a gradual problem

Hmmmm. Don't know about the existence of a thousand dollar solenoid that would be in the spark system. That sounds like faulty info. What's the asking and color, miles, ?

What a bargain! Good thing I'm low on garage space! Looks good on those crappy low RES pics. He'd probably take less. I sure hate to see it turn into a parts car. If it was here in Portland, I'd grab it! (unless it is really trashed)

So I talked at length with the owner of the 600 SL today and also the MB mech. The Mech told me he was 99% sure it was the left distrubutor that was the problem. I went to a salvage yard and they have an engine with less then 100000 miles on is and they would sell both distributors for $500.00. Is this a job that an above average shade tree mechanic (me, even tho there is not much shade in Arizona) could do or does this have to be done by a shop with special equipment?

Please check my math.
After the distributors, you'll be left with $124,500.00 for repairs.

MY question is with two totally separate ignition systems, why doesn't the other bank at least run. In the LHM the car runs entirely on the passengers cylinders. Good that you have a parts source. I'm not sold that it's a distributor. Still an intriguing project !

It could be an easy not expensive repair...
Didn't we all had starting problems here and there???
Did we dump the car?
94 can have harness problems.

Regards,
aam..

First what is a CPS? So it is kind of like I had with a Corvette once wire was broke to the injectors on one side and it would only run on four cylinders. So what you are saying if one distributor is bad it will still start and run

I agree. I'd give it a shot at that price if it was in Portland.

Someone could correct me, but I believe it would. If a crank or cam position sensor gave no or bad information to the engine management computers, they might kill the spark. Could be lots of small stuff.

Your Parts Search Returned 1 Part(s)

Does V12 have two CPS's? I do not know. The website says "left" so there may be one for the right. It's a $100 gamble. You'll be left with $124,400 for repairs.
I don't if if you can take it out to test for continuity. Best approach is "borrow" someone's car's CPS, put it in. How well do you know the seller? Keep in mind that he may raise the price if the car starts and runs if it turns out to be some easy fix. Play your game ...
Maybe someone can loan his SL600's CPS for $50 to try.

well I took the plung and it's setting in my garage. Now the fun begins. I guess it's the ignition moduels that need replacement. Need help here does it need two moduels or one? I see on ebay they have them with two plugins. And has the v12 it's on moduels or does others fit
